Duolingo’s year-end language insights

I’ve long appreciated how Duolingo removes so much friction from trying on a new language — and demystifying languages in general.

Duolingo now claims an impressive 500 million language learners around the world. Based on its latest year-end post, here are the more popular languages within each country:

I can confirm that I’ve spent the most of my time learning and re-learning Spanish on the app, in line with many other Americans.

Ukrainian also saw a surge of interest over the past year — to the tune of more than 1.3 million new language learners:

Based on research for the Report Card, Russian is on the decline among global websites while Ukrainian is rising.

Lots to digest here — my resolution for 2023 is to try on a few new languages…
