Starlink is technically global, linguistically not so much

Starlink, the SpaceX-operated satellite communications service, “is now delivering initial beta service both domestically and internationally, and will continue expansion to near global coverage of the populated world in 2021.”

Naturally, I was curious to see if the Starlink website was as global as the communications service.

Turns out, not so much. Not yet at least.

Here is the home page. To get to a global gateway, you need to click on the menu.

And here it is under the menu. I love the globe icon but the “US” text could be confusing in this context.

Finally, here is the menu overlay.

Not many languages so far. I was optimistic we’d see an investment in markets in Africa, the Americas and Asia that are currently underserved, as this is one of the major selling points of the service. But it is not to be.

I plan to revisit a year from now to see that linguistic reach aligns better with the reach of the service.
